Biography

“No, I’m not from around here.” I talk funny. I was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in Mississippi. I was always into bikes I guess since I didn’t like the football/ baseball mentality that rules the South. I got a push down the driveway from my dad and pedaled. I remember a police car was behind me and I was afraid he would stop me for weaving.

I did some touring in high school on a Raleigh Professional not really realizing until later how badly it rode with a load on it. I worked in bike shop jobs during the mid seventies through college and after, while racing on the road throughout the southeast.

Then I got a mountain bike. It’s really too hot in Mississippi to have fun on a mountain bike…

I got a job at Fat City Cycles in 1990. Merlin was across the courtyard and we shared the same food truck. I worked at Fat until it was sold and moved to New York. I raced mountain bikes—a lot.

Several Ex-Fat employees had not had enough and banded together to start Independent Fabrication. I was one of those. We had no place to work, no tools and no money but we still went into business against all odds. I worked as a bike courier for the first few years and lived in some strange places. It was entertaining for sure! I did a lotmore mountain bike racing while at IF, singlespeeding 24’s and 100’s. I spent a lot of time in the Seven van with Skip. I was the last of the originals to leave, in 2010.

Now I’m at Seven and loving it. Everyone here is very professional and good at their job. In the painting department where I’m working, there is an excited atmosphere with everyone working together to do the best paint jobs we can. Seems like I’ve been headed this way for a long time.
