Mark’s Orange Crush

Mark is a rider we’ve collaborated with a few times. He brings a lot of forethought and passion to his bike projects, and this was no exception.

This is Mark’s Expat S, monster cross bike, and some kind words, below.

Thanks again for your help (and Neil’s help) on the monster cross…”Orange Crush.” I’m still working rounding up a few orange accessories, but for the most part, she’s all built up and ready to ride ! I’m excited for future adventures!

Regarding the build, I decided to use a SRAM 1 x 11 drivetrain. A work colleague was selling parts, so I was more than happy to buy those from him! I’ve always loved Shimano parts, but I do really like the simplicity, reliability, and range of the SRAM single chain ring set-up.  To support the orange theme, I used the Chris King mango headset, headset spacers, and bottom bracket (ceramic…so smooth!).

I tracked down a Phil Wood orange seat post collar. And I had the head badge powder coated at a local auto paint store. The orange flame decals are a work in progress. These ones aren’t sticking very well, so I suspect they will be short lived. For wheels, I stuck with DT Swiss hubs…so reliable and easy to service. The anodized Chris King, I-9, and Hope hubs are nice, but I’m a DT Swiss fan. The hubs are laced to DT Swiss XM401 rims and I’m currently using Maxxis Treadlite tires. The cockpit is complete with Thomson post and stem, Salsa Cowbell handlebars, and Cobb saddle.

Jon’s Evergreen SL

This is Jon’s Evergreen SL, built with our friends at Cascade Bicycle Studio in Seattle. A wide cassette with disc brakes and fenders seems to be nearly the ideal bike for Seattle’s hilly, rainy riding, and this is perhaps, the high-performance answer to every question that city can pose.

Matching Chris King pink headset and hubs are a nice touch on the bead-blasted frame.

Joe’s Evergreen SL

This is Joe’s Evergreen SL, built with the fine folks at High Gear Cyclery in Stirling, NJ. This one has bead-blasted decals for that clean, subtle look. Chris King blue headset adds just that little touch of color.

Hi Seven, bike is built and just needs a test ride at High Gear before I take it home.  Can’t wait!

I am planning on participating in lots of mixed terrain rides in the spring (Hell of Hunderton, LLWH) and will be riding dirt/gravel all winter.

Roger’s Axiom

Raj2Roger is a friend, one of the fine people at Ride Studio Cafe who sells our bikes, but much more than that, a regular collaborator and a guy who thinks about bikes too much (which is exactly enough).

IMG_0021This is the second bike we’ve built for Roger. The first one, an Evergreen SL,  challenged our paint team with the incorporation of real coffee grounds into the finish, as well as a modified five dollar bill inside the fork leg (photos of that bike below).

IMG_0014JPGFor this new bike, an Axiom, Roger wanted our master painter,  Staci, to create a realistic turquoise effect on the frame on top of a deep mango color that matched Chris King components of the same hue.

Keith’s Evergreen S

What’s in a commuter?

Keith was looking for a bike that could be everything — daily commuter through Brooklyn and Manhattan, upstate dirt crusher — a bike that would look good, and ride even better.

The Evergreen was the best platform for this super-build.

Seven_Evergreen_Blog-3The first bike we built for Keith, a couple years ago, was a custom painted Parlee. Titanium frames are magic, so we didn’t need any paint on the Evergreen. The Chris King Turquoise kit gives the bike just the right amount of zing. To give the bike a well rounded personality, we laced the hubs to Hed Belgium Plus rims. The wheels can take a 25mm race tire, or a 35mm plushy deluxe (the Compass Bon Jon Pass will be nice). The Evergreen’s personality changes right with the tires.

We dialed the geometry for stability, we dialed the acceleration to 11. This was the note we received from Keith after his first ride:

“Rode in today and damn man…the best way to describe the ride is it floats on the road.”

Next up, Keith puts the bike through its paces in the Berkshires. Can’t wait.
